The history of herbal medicine is intertwined with the history of humanity. Before agriculture, wild plants, fruit, bark, and seeds served as the primary sources of sustenance. Over time, people discovered that certain plants had specific medicinal properties, leading to the development of traditional herbal remedies.
With the advent of agriculture, people began cultivating crops while continuing to gather medicinal herbs from the wild. These herbs were used in daily life to treat ailments and promote health.
Specialized herbalists, known as Simmani, ventured into the mountains to collect particularly potent herbs. These herbs were then sorted, dried, or processed into liquids and sold at herbal medicine stores. Households also kept a supply of emergency herbs for immediate use.
During the Joseon Dynasty, significant efforts were made to translate various medical texts into Korean, enabling the general public to easily access information about medicinal herbs and remedies and to use them effectively for health and disease treatment.
